1. How to write and say the date in American English
- Rule of order: Month Day Year. In American English (US) date representation the month comes first, just before the day, followed by the year.
- You write the date using numbers as: 07-15-2018 = July 15th, 2018;
- You write and say the date, in words as: "July (the)* fifteenth, twenty eighteen" OR "July (the)* fifteenth, two thousand eighteen";
- * The definite article "the" can be left out.
2. How to write and say the date in British English
- Rule of order: Day Month Year. In British English (UK) date representation the day comes first, just before the month, followed by the year.
- You write the date using numbers as: 15-07-2018 = 15th of July, 2018;
- You write and say the date, in words as: "the fifteenth of July, twenty eighteen" OR "the fifteenth of July, two thousand and eighteen";
3. It is common to use numbers instead of months when writing the date
- 04-05-2018 is April 5th, 2018 according to the American English standard, but it is the 4th of May, 2018 in British English.
- 01-09-2020 is January 9th, 2020 according to the American English standard, but it is the 1st of September, 2020 in British English.
- 07-03-2022 is July 3rd, 2022 according to the American English standard, but it is 7th of March, 2022 in British English.
